One of the world's most famous and exciting horse races, the Kentucky Derby takes place each year on the first Saturday in May. Churchill Downs racetrack in the Kentucky city of Louisville has been host to this event since 1875.
Contested by the best three-year old colts and fillies, the race is the first leg of America's most coveted title in racing, The Triple Crown. Not since Affirmed in 1978 has a horse won all three qualifying races to attain this title, and it is feat that has only been achieved by 11 horses since its inception in 1907.
